Mark Hamill, Kurt Cobain and David Spade: What Happened?

By Brett Buchanan/Alternative Nation

Comedy writer Matt Oswalt tweeted a photo of the infamous Kurt Cobain tribute mural featuring David Spade to mark Cobain’s birthday on Wednesday.

He wrote, “Happy Birthday Kurt Cobain! Your words and image will never been forgotten.”

Mark Hamill, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, posted in response, “Nice tribute, but weird they used a picture of David Spade.”

David Spade himself weighed in on the mural in 2017, Entertainment Weekly reported.

“Everyone is sending me this,” David Spade tweeted in September 2017 about the mural designed by street artist Lushsux.

Entertainment Weekly reported at the time:

The image was painted earlier this week on a building in Lintz, Austria. It’s accompanied by the quote, “It’s better to burn out than fade away,” which was attributed to the Nirvana frontman, who died in 1994 at the age of 27. The line is actually from Neil Young, though Cobain quoted it in his suicide note.

The mural was done in the style of the Spade Internet meme that’s no doubt infuriating some Nirvana fans and sticklers of ’90s nostalgia. Now, it’s immortalized for all to see.

David Spade is a bit too old to play Kurt Cobain in a film, so we’ll have to live with the meme mural for now.
